The racial wealth gap in the United States is a product of generations of systemic inequality, lack of funding and resources in our public education systems, barriers to employment opportunities, and access to capital. These challenges, compounded with the devastating economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, have created substantial systemic barriers for Black and African American entrepreneurs to develop, expand, and grow their own business. Simply put, Black-Owned businesses have to fight harder and longer to sustain.
Using your purchasing power, you can help better distribute wealth in New York City, by supporting the fantastic local Black-owned brands. The following is a list of Black-owned Made in NYC members for you to support now, and always. The list is a work in progress, but as more information is provided, this list will grow and become more expansive.
If your business was included on this list incorrectly or you have information you would like to appear differently, please email us at MadeinNYC@prattcenter.net

A Brooklyn native and creative, Gwen has always loved fashion and all things stylish – clothes, jewels, shiny pens, cool notebooks, you name it. For the girl who loved fashion, shopping – for apparel in particular – wasn’t always easy, as she had dealt with body image insecurities for much of her life.
Gwen’s foundation in apparel design forged her relationship with the non-profit organization Little Dresses for Africa in 2010. After working with the organization for a few years, Gwen later formed her own initiative in support of the organization, 100 Dresses for Little Dresses for Africa. Gwen organizes a group of volunteers every year to assist with making and designing 100 dresses for little girls across the globe who need them. The project is currently funded primarily by Gwen Beloti Collection. A portion of every sale helps to fund the initiative. In theory and in practice Gwen Beloti customers are key contributors in serving the community.

I have five siblings, she was a single mother and she created all of our clothing. She made her patterns from the newspaper. From an early age, I created my own pieces. People always stopped me to ask who made my clothing. I now design my own unique pieces created with love in NYC just for you. Come walk these stylish streets with me. Uptown Style + Haute Couture.

Every year, tons of clothing items end up in landfills. Some of them are perfectly fine but because of a stain, a hole, or a broken zipper, a burnt sleeve they wind up in the bin and get on the way to polluting our environment. We actually remake fashionable clothing out of these discarded items. Everyone can embellish or sew patches on a jacket, we don’t revamp clothing by adding cool things on perfectly good item of clothing, we go beyond, we rework them and make them new again. Certain types of fabric don’t disintegrate in the landfills and most likely finish in the ocean.
To show our care and respect for the environment and the planet, we make it our mission to up cycle these clothes. We salvage vintage clothing, mostly designer pieces that are damaged or partly destroyed, and bring them back to life with a fresh, fun, and young twist. By doing this, we allow them to be appreciated as contemporary fashion. Our skirts and t-shirts are made out of leftover fabric from the fashion industry and we use pre-existing prints or print our gorgeous signature motifs onto them. What we’re doing might sound like just a grain of sand, but we believe that it’s a grain of hope toward eradicating pollution.

Yaf Sparkle Boutique was created out of the desire to provide an environment where fun, fashion and pleasure are combined as one. During the summer of 2012, after succesively making a name in New York’s close-knit Jewelry scene for over a decade, Yaf Boye-Flaegel realized that the next logical step in her career was to fulfill her dream and cut the leash of employment. ‘Yaf Sparkle’ was initially created in the early 2000’s as a mere side project out of the desire to raise funds for good causes. Witnessing her father in his efforts to support the ones in need throughout her whole life, Yaf felt it was time to step up and chip in. Trunk shows in her friends apartments became her weekend pastime and the amount of donations collected grew slowly but steadily. To this day, ten percent of Yaf Sparkle Jewelry’s net proceeds go to supporting non-profits, most notably the ASB Foundation which Yaf founded in 2007. The ASB Foundation is an international humanitarian organization which supports the growth and development of the children in Koutal, Senegal, a small village created in 1968 to house people with leprosy and their families. Their ultimate goal is to enrich the lives of these children who have been affected by their parents’ disease.

I started supplying two local boutiques, too, where the products are regularly sold and also popular. I launched my website in 2018 and, all together, I sell about $50 worth of products weekly.
