June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual or Allied+ month, and to honor them, Made in NYC is highlighting local manufacturers and makers who are part of and support this community.
Originally established as “Gay Pride Day” to honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots, Pride has expanded to represent a month-long celebration of parades, protests, gatherings, educational events, memorials for those lost to hate crimes and HIV/AIDS, and honoring those who lost their lives in the fight towards to gay liberation.
While the June 15th 2020 Supreme Court ruling to protect LGBTQIA+ workers from being fired based on their sexual orientation is a major cause for celebration, there are still substantial inequities faced by LGBTQIA+ entrepreneurs, such as less access to capital, barriers with distribution in the marketplace, and prejudice from the media and consumers.
With your spending power, you have a tremendous ability to support the immense creativity and excellence put forth by LGBTQIA+ small businesses, making fantastic products right here in New York City. This list is a work in progress, but as more information is provided, this list will grow and become more expansive.
If your business was included on this list incorrectly or you have information you would like to appear differently, please email us at MadeinNYC@prattcenter.net

New York Embroidery Studio
New York Embroidery Studio is a full service embellishment factory located in the heart of New York City’s Fashion District. It’s also kind of amazing for anyone with an interest in fashion or design, it’s kind of a wonderland. It’s like Santa’s fashion workshop, but every day is Christmas Eve. Packages zooming in and out, sequins, ribbon and beads everywhere you look in every color you can imagine, and people everywhere at machines and work tables, pulling together elements from across the globe to go back out and fill stores in every mall and village in the country and around the world. It’s a lot of work, but we love it.
To show our care and respect for the environment and the planet, we make it our mission to up cycle these clothes. We salvage vintage clothing, mostly designer pieces that are damaged or partly destroyed, and bring them back to life with a fresh, fun, and young twist. By doing this, we allow them to be appreciated as contemporary fashion. Our skirts and t-shirts are made out of leftover fabric from the fashion industry and we use pre-existing prints or print our gorgeous signature motifs onto them. What we’re doing might sound like just a grain of sand, but we believe that it’s a grain of hope toward eradicating pollution.
The shirting line is modern class with a unique edge, and the focus is on the staple: the button-down shirt. Great style doesn’t exclude function. We made it a design priority to overcome the most dreaded aspect of button-downs: BOOB-GAPE. Forget wrestling to keep your shirts smooth and gape-free. Put away your arsenal of undershirts, safety pins, and double-sided tape. We know, the struggle is real. With our shirts, you can rest assured you will always be gape-free.
