Tamara Jerardo, a graphic designer and proud Brooklynite, started Brooklyn Candle Studio out of her and her boyfriend's (now fiance's) Carroll Gardens apartment. She had been making candles mainly as gifts for friends and family, and had perfected the craft after months of trial and error. A believer in local and eco-friendly products, she chose to exclusively use wax derived from sustainable American grown soy, lead-free cotton wicks, pure essential oils and high quality fragrance oils. At the urging of her candle fans, she opened her first Etsy shop in September 2013 with only 8 scents in her signature vintage-inspired mason jars. Soon after opening her little shop, messages started pouring in from retailers requesting Tamara's beautifully packaged and deliciously scented soy candles for their shops. Overwhelmed by the unexpected demand, after months of moonlighting as a candlemaker, she left her job as an art director in the fashion industry to spend her days running Brooklyn Candle Studio. Tamara now hand-pours all her candles in her studio at Supersmith's shared creative workspace at 125 Dikeman St. (Brooklyn Candle Studio outgrew its stovetop roots very quickly).
