Fairway’s story is a uniquely New York story. Born on the sidewalks of the Upper West Side in the 1930’s, it started as a fruit and vegetable stand and grew up to become the quintessential New York City food store that all New Yorkers can truly call their own.
Accomplished historian Simon Schama once wrote that if it were possible to award the Congressional Medal of Honor to a food market, Fairway would already have won one for its service to appetite. As a home-grown native, Fairway understands New Yorkers’ legendary passion for great food and continues to serve their appetites with an incredible array of the foods they love. From hyper-local foods produced right here in NYC to those found across the globe, Fairway brings together traditional favorites and innovative new products, as well as delicious, freshly made foods, so busy city dwellers can enjoy the convenience of one-stop shopping while indulging their inner foodies.
The newest chapter in Fairway’s story is being written by Village Super Market and the Sumas family. Starting as immigrants from adversity, Nick and Perry Sumas opened Village Super Market’s first store in 1937. As the Sumas brothers pursued the American dream, not only did their family grow, but their business also grew to include 30 stores across New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York. Fast-forward to today. In this city built by immigrants, Village and the Sumas family are now rebuilding and improving Fairway Market so it will continue to serve generations to come in the world’s greatest city.
Fairway Market is an iconic regional supermarket chain with four stores in Manhattan, one in Pelham Manor, and a state-of-the-art production facility in the Bronx.
