Luz Studio
Roberto Silva Raygadas’s love for sewing propelled him to establish his business, Luz Studio, where he creates samples for emerging fashion designers and small clothing companies. A formally-trained fashion designer from Mexico, Roberto claims that the process of making garments is what draws him to his work rather than the finished product. Roberto collaborates with local companies and designers, aiming to become a valuable part of the supply chain that supports and nurtures their business growth.
As an LGBTQ+ owned business, Luz Studio emphasizes the importance of offering a service that can compete both locally and globally from a place of honesty and inclusivity “all in a society that once completely diminished my professional capacities just for being gay. Now we also have the opportunity to educate customers and show our capabilities in an environment that, because of our approach, has allowed us to learn more, participate more, and be part of the change.”
Reflecting on his challenges, Roberto says, “Unfortunately, stereotypes related to LGBTQ+ make people think that anything related to fashion is all ‘fluff’ and glamour, disregarding any technical skills you might have.” However, Roberto has risen above these misconceptions and proven that fashion is not just about aesthetics, but also about craftsmanship and skill.
For aspiring entrepreneurs in the LGBTQ+ community, Roberto offers advice with unwavering support. “Go for it. Work hard, be there every day. Thankfully, we live in a time where barriers exist less and less, and society doesn’t look as much to your sexual preference to decide your capabilities and success.”
