Sukushine

Manhattan

After an abrupt move to the States from India at 11, Sukalp Bhatija suffered from a massive culture shock. However, her childhood fascination with the colors, patterns, and shiny embroidery utilized in Indian textiles provided solace and inspiration – as well as a connection to home. “I yearned to be able to express that interest, through my art class projects, my clothes or just my personal aesthetic. I studied textile design in college and realized that most techniques, fibers and dyes come from Eastern countries. As a way to connect more with my culture, I practiced those techniques and recreated the textiles I once admired, and wanted to expand that passion into something bigger.” Sukalp founded Sukushine, a fashion brand offering a diverse range of womenswear, menswear, and accessories inspired by South Asian designs.

As an AAPI business owner, Sukalp understands the significance of her role with Sukushine. “Owning and operating a business that highlights one of the Asian American cultures is quite rewarding, and a job I don’t take lightly.” Sukalp’s mission is to celebrate South Asian textiles with a modern twist and create pieces that anyone can wear.
