Think Talk Create

Brooklyn

Think Talk Create, located in Industry City, is a vibrant, light-filled space offering a range of creative services and products. Co-owned by Magen Rodriguez and her mother, Evelyn Rivera, the business is a hub for custom apparel, unique art pieces, and interactive workshops designed to foster personal expression.

“We love the space we’re in. It allows us to test and experiment with different products and services. The flexibility and openness of New York City are crucial for what we do.” From using their Cricut machine to customize tote bags, cups, and more, to creating unique goo mixtures for children’s parties, Think Talk Create provides one-of-a-kind items and memorable experiences. If a pre-teen wants an entirely Stranger Things themed birthday party, from the decorations to the dessert to the goodie bags, Think Talk Create is the business that makes that dream a reality.

The mother-daughter duo brings their passion for learning and experience from New York City’s education system into their operations. Both Magen and Evelyn’s involvement with the Department of Education (DOE) significantly shapes their approach to community engagement. Evelyn, who has been working with special education students for nearly 26 years, and Magen, who focuses on language learners and oversees programs aimed at supporting underprivileged and immigrant communities, are deeply committed to inclusivity. “Working with the DOE has shown me the importance of inclusive practices,” Magen notes. “There’s a significant need for resources that truly address the unique challenges faced by these communities.”

Magen and Evelyn built their business in response to their own experiences growing up with limited resources, but always finding innovative ways to create with their family. This fostered a world of creativity through design, crafting, and celebration that now influences their instructional practices, allowing them to inspire others to embrace resourcefulness and creativity in their educational journeys.

Through Think Talk Create, Magen and her team strive to bridge gaps and create opportunities for diverse communities. “We’re not just about making products; we’re about telling stories and making a difference,” she explains. Their commitment to inclusivity not only impacts their business operations but also enhances the experiences they offer, from art workshops to team-building activities. “We believe in the power of creativity to enhance team dynamics and personal well-being,” Magen adds.

The business has also transformed Magen’s family life. “Our family dynamics have evolved with the business,” she shares. “We’re a small, tight-knit group of women, and everyone is involved.” Even Magen’s 16-year-old sister contributes by volunteering her time.

As Think Talk Create continues to grow, Magen remains hopeful and determined. “We’re applying for grants and seeking partnerships to support our mission. It’s challenging, especially in New York City, but we’re optimistic and committed to making a positive impact.” This September, the business will be moving into an even larger space in Industry City and have launched a GoFundMe to help with moving costs.
